Beulah's Basketball Game

During several conversations with our staff, Beulah had mentioned she loved the game of basketball. Digging into this, come to find out, Beulah played forward on her high school basketball team during the mid-late 1930’s. Crossroads High School in Alabama, where she played, has since burned and never re-opened. With the closing of her school, she was under the impression, girls basketball had gone by the wayside. So when talking with her, and her finding out that girls basketball was still ongoing and even a national league (NWBA) had been formed; she lit up like a Christmas tree. Eyes twinkling and face glowing said “I would like to see a girl’s basketball game again.”

Girlscout Leader

Ruth is one of our residents when she was younger was very much involved in her community, her church, and especially the Girl Scouts. Ruth loved working with the Girl Scouts because it really gave her a sense of purpose, she loved working with young children, and being in the outdoors really gave her enjoyment. At times when we are reminiscing as an activity many times Ruth has expressed her joy working with the Girl Scouts and going up to the local campsite during the summers. Therefore, our Markerter at our facility has a young daughter who is apart of the Girl Scouts and we would love to have Ruth become an honorary Girl Scout Leader for their troop, participate in a craft to help earn them a badge, and enjoy a wonderful treat. A dream like this would truly mean a lot to Ruth.

Memories of Alaska

Katie has resided at Desert Lane Nursing and Rehab for 3 years. She has no visitors, family, or friends. Katie worked as a CNA for 30 years in Florida. However, her fondest memories were of the 7 years she lived in Alaska and worked plowing snow. Katie moved to Alaska for the experience which she will treasure always. She talked about traveling throughout the state and how beautiful it was. She loved the mountains most of all. It would be extremely meaningful for Katie to view Alaska again through the help of a portable DVD player and "Over Alaska" DVD. The staff at Desert Lane further explained that many of their elders, in addition to Katie, would greatly benefit from portable DVD players. Many of the elders are not physically able to leave their beds and the portable players would allow them to enjoy classic movies and documentaries. Desert Lane would be able to access a continuous variety of DVDs made available by the local library.

Royal Getaway

Ms. Barbara and her husband retired to Elmcroft a few years ago. Her mother was also a resident in our facility. They did alot of traveling but she always wanted him to take her to see a castle. Due to a rapid decline in his health, he was unable to take her. After his passing, Ms.Barbara said she never thought she would get the chance until she heard of second wind dreams. Even when she approached me about this dream, she had already done her research and found a castle in Ashville North Carolina. I am working very hard to fulfill this dream for her because not only is she a great spokesperson for Elmcroft but after all she has been through with her spinal surgeries and tumors she continues to have a positive attitude and a great spirit!!!!!!!
